NEDERLAND — Almost immediately after the gates opened for the 5th annual Ned Jazz & Wine festival, camping chairs and blankets filled the space in front of the stage, making it clear what the patrons were there for.
Friends embraced and vendors began to pour their libations, keeping the vibes high from the moment the event began.
With wine the focus, 17 local Colorado wineries shared their products, but that was not all there was to offer. You could also find cider, sake, beer, and spirits as well as several non-alcoholic options ranging from cocktails to hop water. When they arrived, festival goers each received a complimentary tasting glass, keeping waste at a minimum.
As for the music, to start the day, Gabriel Santiago Trio performed on The Muse Stage, sponsored by Muse Performance Space in Lafayette. Santiago expressed his Brazilian roots through his South American-style jazz licks, the perfect match for the laid back event in Chipeta Park.
JoFoKe & Same Cloth followed with a two-hour set of both original music and uniquely arranged cover tunes ranging from Stevie Wonder to Andre 3000 of Outkast. JoFoKe’s incredible vocal range was accompanied by her talented band and together they made perfect harmony. Not even the rain could pull the audience away from their magnetic energy.
Concluding the musical acts was River Eckert & Friends. Eckert is an extremely impressive talent at the young age of 16. He was joined by his dad, Jake Eckert, Grammy award-winning recording engineer and producer. Others involved here were some popular musicians in the local scene and Nederland community, including Jeff Franca of Thievery Corporation and Scott Messersmith, former member of Carolina Chocolate Drops. In addition to them, Dan Africano of Thievery Corporation joined on bass and Drew Sayers of The Motet brought the sax.
Eckert and his band brought the sounds of New Orleans to Nederland, led by the young musician’s massively impressive skills on the keys. With music from The Meters to Dr. John, Eckert had the crowd getting out of their seats and dancing. The joyful energy permeated through the venue as patrons made their final purchases and filled their totes with swag.
There was no shortage of good pairing foods, with four food trucks and even some fresh-shucked oysters from Shuck Brothers. Gator Tails provided creole and Cajun eats, The Day of Tacos served Mexican favorites, The Wandering Potato had all things potato, and Temaki Tornado offered their signature sushi hand rolls. You could even find cupcakes and chocolate for your sweet tooth from Gold Mine Cupcakes and DAR Chocolate.
Festival organizer Stephanie Andelman enthusiastically handed out prizes throughout the day, ranging from Eldora passes to carousel rides, with all proceeds from raffle ticket purchases going to Outdoor Leadership of TEENS, Inc., the local organization for Nederland youth. In addition to that, at least $5 of every event ticket purchased also went to the organization.
The event ran like a well-oiled machine, as everyone worked together to bring joy and jazz to the heart of Nederland. Not even a bit of rain could put a wrench in the vibrant energy of the crowd.
Although the event was at capacity, it never felt overcrowded; lines remained short for food and beverages. Keep your eye out for Ned Jazz & Wine 2027!
