Pride, perennials, and persistence

Happy Pride Month from The Mountain-Ear!

Posted

BLACK HAWK — Since it’s June, I wanted to make a personal observation about Pride month. I feel exceptionally honored to work around or with several people who are part of the LGBTQ community. I find it rewarding to be in a space I personally find to be inclusive of all, a space that fosters relationships and works to make sure we are all equal and valued for our contributions to the organization.

We work for a company that encourages each of us to be who we are, to embrace all our weird, quirky, funkiness, and also recognizes our talents and unique perspectives.

This week, I have been exceptionally lucky to spend time working outside the office, and outside my home. I normally work in my home office most days, working in the Nederland office Wednesday for staff meetings. This Monday, I worked at The Vault, inside Brightwood Music, for half the day. Then I worked at Very Nice Brewing in the afternoon. It was nice to have a quiet place to work on my laptop, then sit and talk to friends for a little while after work.

On Tuesday, I brought the weed whacker to town and worked at the office outside, weed whacking for a little while, then planting flowers. Kaia and I planted a bunch of flowers. This year we bought perennials from Duran's Hobby Acres, then bought annuals to fill in the space. I love having flowers around the office. It makes my heart happy to take care of the flowers all summer.

I also did some weed whacking at The Vault with my friend Christine. We took down the heaviest areas of weeds to make it easier to see the beautiful wildflowers, the mining equipment, the paths from The Vault to the sidewalk, and more. Then I watered the flowers that are new this year, in hopes of giving them a good start.

The rest of Tuesday, I spent time meeting with my boss, meeting with our contractor for The Vault, brainstorming new ideas for growth in town from our unique perspective, and then had dinner with my hubby.

Last, I want to just mention one of my favorite phrases, because this week, it is so very relevant. “Persistence pays off,” is a personal favorite.

Many of you know this is my 20th year at the newspaper. Many of you also know I am working on my slow withdrawal from the day-to-day work, preferring to work toward the staff that is stepping up to fill the gap, actually filling the gap. I will leave the guiding action and move into an overseer position.

I will no longer be involved in daily operations, I will step away to encourage the department managers to take their departments to the next level, while I offer only my wisdom and words of what has or has not worked in the past.

It still means I am not going anywhere — at least for right now. It simply means I need to step back and allow these amazing people to grab the reins I have been holding (far too tightly) for too long.

In the meantime, I’m revamping our billing processes and making sure the financial side of the company is strong and ready to take on these changes that are happening within the organization. Slowly, one step at a time.

I’m still reachable by email at info@themountainear.com. I’m still in the Nederland office at least once per week. I’m still available by phone at 720-960-2900 (this is my work phone).
