Mountain bike race in Eagle brings drama

Posted

It was an eventful day in Eagle for the Nederland High School Mountain Bike Team–with dusty conditions, corkscrew turns, and the varsity riders getting evacuated mid-ride due to lightning.

The freshman, sophomore, and JV girls had to find their sprinting legs when their races were shortened to one quick lap due to the unpredictable Colorado weather. Despite all the obstacles, most of our Ned riders had their best race of the year: the team took third place again in Division 2.

Our podium finishers in this race included Laila Waldron, who nabbed third in varsity girls; and Amika Begin, who finished fourth for sophomore girls. Codi Waldron took 11th in freshman girls and Johnny Moss moved up 12 spots in freshman boys. Grayson Shurr had a fast few laps and was in 18th place when he was pulled off the course with the other varsity boys.

Shurr states, “It was a strange feeling to have my mind ready to sprint up that final hill, to suddenly getting pulled off the course and then chatting all friendly with the other riders who I wanted to beat just seconds before.”

Again, we’d love to thank our sponsors who made the new team jerseys happen–Eldora Mountain Resort, Justin’s, Rudi’s, Peak to Peak Endurance, and Reboot Mindfulness.

Regionals for the Nederland Mountain Bike Team are in Fruita on October 6.
