The major business at the Gilpin County RE-1 School Board meeting on September 17, 2024, was to meet with the district lawyer in an executive session to get guidance concerning board member legal roles, responsibilities, and authority.

All the board members were in attendance, with board President Sarah Swanson presiding over the proceedings. Students participated in the meeting, with freshman Cadince Willis as the student of the month and the fifth-grade student council discussing leadership with the board.

Elementary Principal Patrick Linnehan reported that the new Bridges Mathematics curriculum has been well received by both staff and students.

Linnehan said that the First Annual GCSD Color Run is scheduled for Thursday, September 26. Nearly $5,000 has been raised to date. The 100 Elk field trip for 4th and 5th graders is scheduled for October 1 through 3.

Secondary Principal Sarah Reich’s report highlighted homecoming activities and professional learning (PL) opportunities for staff.

One PL meeting focused on implementing Tier I interventions, like community building circles, building relationships with students, and positive behavior incentives. Reich stressed that the goal is to provide high levels of support for students as well as high levels of accountability.

Superintendent David MacKenzie reported that he is focused on the rollout of the new student information system (PowerSchool). MacKenzie said that he is working with the vendor and staff to make the new system available to students and parents.

The next RE-1 Board of Education meeting will be on October 1, 2024, in the school boardroom at 7 p.m. It will be a Dialogue and Study Work Session. The principals will present 2024 accreditation reports, and the Board will meet and confer with staff.

At this point, the Board adjourned into executive session.
