hitchhiking year round
at 9,000 feet
for forty winters
will teach you something
about wind
about fresh air
about poetry
about quiet
cut only by birds
and the sound of footsteps
on snow wet asphalt
your words teach these things too
you teach us
the spinning back kick
of a good poem
you show us
a New York City smile
on the Rocky Mountain Ridgeline
you light up
the fire of revolution
and revelation
you tell us we have to learn
what is going to keep you warm
through the night
and what is going to
burn the whole house down
sometimes you got to
burn it all down
sometimes you let it stand
and for now you still stand
after all these years
in this nonviolent war of words
here’s to another year
up the highway towards home
here’s to a few more good lines
always some more of those
carried on the razor blade wind
down through the mountains
out of your mouth
straight into our hearts
