Dear Editor,
If you have not met John Kittredge, he is quite a character and knows a lot about Central City.
Central City History Talk at Monte Lobo Features ‘The People who Built Central City’ The Belvidere Theater Committee will host a fundraising presentation titled “The People Who Built Central City” on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 4 p.m. The event will take place upstairs at Monte Lobo, 131 Main Street, Central City.
Local historian John Kittredge will lead the discussion, focusing on the contractors and builders who shaped Central City following the Great Fire of 1874. The talk aims to challenge common myths and present a fact-based account of the city’s development, including the construction of the Old Courthouse and its surrounding rock wall, as well as other notable stone structures.
Kittredge, a Russell Gulch resident of more than 50 years, brings firsthand experience from working in local mines and mills, including time as an assayer and mill worker at the Boodle Mill. His presentation will emphasize both historical accuracy and community engagement, with audience participation encouraged.
The event is open to the public, with a suggested $10 donation benefiting the Belvidere Theater restoration fund. Students are welcome to attend free of charge.
