Studio Tour Spotlight: Kathy Bremers

Kathy Bremers’ mother was a “talented oil painter but did not devote much time to painting,” according to Bremers, who owns one of her mother’s paintings. Bremers’ painting journey began 18 years ago.

She has lived along the Peak to Peak since 1979, providing her with “endless inspiration from the beauty surrounding us.” She feels fortunate to have support from her family and her “wonderful mountain community.”

In 2007, the The Palette Gallery group opened on 2nd Street in Nederland and ran for roughly three years. It was a fun adventure for Bremers. “I have had the good fortune to have my artwork for sale in Nederland at several locations, shops in Boulder, and Golden.”

Bremers also enjoys teaching watercolor painting to children and adults, which she has been doing since 2010. She takes pride in “providing techniques to help others discover their artistic voice.”

Bremers is inspired by “the abundant beauty here in Colorado and the desire to help others connect to our natural world; to foster a deeper responsibility within all of us to take care of our home with love and respect.”

“Adding beauty through paintings” deepens this mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother’s happiness. She’s always pleased to share the love of nature with her offspring.

She states her art is a “gentle and fun representation of life in the Rocky Mountains and its beautiful inhabitants.” Subjects in her watercolor art include “mountains, blue skies, clouds, flowers, birds, large and small mammals, glorious golden aspen trees, looming pine trees, snow play, rocks, and water.”

“One of my greatest joys is seeing people connect to nature when viewing my work!” confesses Bremers. Watercolor has been her passion for nearly 20 years. “I have dabbled in oils, soft pastels, and acrylic paints. With watercolor, one needs to go with the flow, working with paint, paper, and brushes, and trusting the process.”

One of her favorite impressionist painters is Claude Monet. Forty years ago, Bremers visited Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, France.

Bremers confesses, “The work of all impressionist artists fills me with overwhelming emotion. I have fond memories from my first installation,17 years ago, where I stood back observing a woman looking at my artwork as she wiped tears from her eyes, instilling in me the confidence to believe in myself and to know that I have something to offer that brings joy to others.”

Even with limited space at home, Bremers finds a corner of the living room next to a picture window where she watches the birds coming to the feeders, and she creates her art. “It probably looks cluttered to others, but for me, I find my ‘flow’ with my supplies surrounding me and within reach. If everything is neat and tidy, I don’t feel as free or inspired to create.”

Aside from nature, Bremers’ husband and children are some of her greatest muses. “They are very supportive. I truly couldn’t do what I do without them. They provide wonderful critiques, help with naming each painting, and provide much-needed help with set up and break down during art shows.”

Bremers spends most Sunday mornings painting with her nine-year old granddaughter, Sophia, on Facebook Messenger. “I instruct some, but mostly we are making lovely memories together. It is a beautiful way to connect.”

Bremers is interested in writing and illustrating children’s books, which she has started with Charlotte Mae Has a Wonder Day! “I have participated in writing courses and am flooded with ideas! I recently put together a book of my paintings for one of my granddaughters for her first birthday.”

Now retired from Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District, Bremers has “more time to prioritize her creative work.” She would like to thank her brother and sister-in-law for inviting her to use their home as studio space and to display her work during the Studio Tour.

Art enthusiasts can find Bremers’ art at the Kaleidoscope Fine Art Gallery, Train Cars Coffee & Kava, and the Wild Bear Nature Center gift shop in Nederland. In Golden, her art is sold at The Red Wagon Gift Shop.
