Nederland Philosophy Club bravely takes on AI

Posted

Dear Editor,

Nederland Community Library offers a wide range of great activities and groups, including one devoted to philosophy.

For the last two years we have met monthly to discuss a reading in or around the vast terrain of philosophy. We have read and talked over everything from Buddha and Aristotle to the Doors of Perception and quantum mechanics.

Lately however we find the subject of AI to be a very compelling topic. Our reading for this month is by Marvin Minsky, one of early-days thinkers who helped organize the 1950’s gathering that coined the term Artificial Intelligence. Cameron Beebe, our philosopher-in-residence, will present this month on the essence of Minsky’s ideas.

But we have also decided to address a cluster of questions that have popped up in all the recent turmoil over the so-called frontier models and their nascent capabilities.

What are AI agents? How do they exist, in what ways is it similar or different from how we exist? What are they capable of, and how do they achieve it?

We think these are fascinating subjects to explore and we invite everyone to join us at the Nederland Library, Tuesday, September 29, at 5 p.m.
