Peak Perspectives

In retrospect

Posted

BLACK HAWK — This has been an incredibly interesting week. As always, we have a million things going on through our coverage area, and the ability to cover about half of them. I mean, come on, for a small newspaper we do some pretty amazing work! Something I always want to recognize with every single staff member we have as well as our contractors, freelancers, etc. Our TEAM is incredible.

So this week, I actually asked someone if they would be interested in writing this column. It was a very polite no. Then I started asking a few people their opinion on the column. I had tons of positive feedback from quite a few locals.

When I first started writing Peak Perspectives, it was simply to share something local that was happening within the community. Sometimes it is personal, sometimes it is very business-like. Most of the time it’s a little bit of each. It’s always a little about what’s going on at the moment.

As I wrap up my 20th year at the newspaper, I guess I see things a little bit differently. I try to share my wisdom, if I have any. I try to share my thoughts on current events. I try to share events that are coming up that I think people should check out. Sometimes there is a little humor and definitely some sarcasm. Once in a while a very deep, sad column about a tragedy that is happening around us...

I do not share my personal opinion on politics, ever. Not in print.

That’s not how this column always ends up. Sometimes it ends up with a plethora of so much information. But overall, that plethora of information probably equals something?

This week I ran a market booth in Allenspark, which was lovely. It was amazing to reconnect with people I have not seen in a while. I have not driven the north route in over a year. But some of them remembered me. And I remembered so many. I enjoyed sitting with Gene Mackey, Editor of the Allenspark Wind, and a previous contributor to The Mountain-Ear.

And I am so thankful I took the day to drive up there and reconnect. Because life is all about connections. Allenspark is a place I would dream of someday retiring, if I could still live at altitude. But I think someday I will have to move down the hill to be closer to medical services for my disease. Let’s hope I am wrong!

I’m just going to tell you a little bit about how Peak Perspectives came about. I started writing a column sometime around 2021. It was my own personal perspective of what was the most important thing to be focusing on for the week, or the month, or the year. It has always been a personal opinion, never intended to be anything more.

And, as I work through the process of attempting to separate myself from the newspaper, I suppose Peak Perspectives should perhaps go away? I mean ultimately what am I trying to say? What value does this column bring to the community? What could we replace it with? What would be more beneficial?

I will keep pondering the answer to that question as I near my newspaper anniversary (Halloween). And I will have work conversations with the current staff to figure out if this is or remains relevant to The Mountain-Ear.

And in the meantime, I’m gonna give you all the links because you should know how to reach us.
