BLACK HAWK — I started my column early, with the best intention of turning it in early. Like, a week ago I had it all planned out. I had several paragraphs written. I was going to talk about my thoughts on so many things, including the heated election we have going on, and how we could all be a little nicer to each other.
First and foremost, if you have not voted, please get out and do so. Vote with your conscience for the future of your local, state and federal government. Vote as if tomorrow matters most, for you, your kids, your grandkids. Just VOTE.
I was going to talk about my personal thoughts on the upcoming weekend, my personal anniversary at The Mountain-Ear. Somehow, appropriately, I joined the publication on Halloween of 2006. So Saturday, I’ll celebrate quite loudly by handing out kids’ kazoos and trinkets at Brightwood Music. And then I’ll go home and celebrate quietly as I prepare for the next week.
And Sunday I’ll start year twenty-one, and it will be much like this week since they kinda all blend together sometimes. I’m quite positive I can’t retire quite yet and I have no real savings, so there is that part. I think you’re stuck with me for a little while. Hopefully that’s good news.
In the meantime, I’m gonna just say how thankful I am for the communities that have supported this paper, as well as all of our publications over the last 50 years. And the people that send in letters each week about the communities, concerns, accolades, and about the places we live. And I’m thankful for the people that have worked here for months, and years, and even decades. I’m thankful for strong relationships with our local businesses, thankful we can share your stories, thankful for the love we receive every day, right here from the entire Peak to Peak community. I am always, eternally, thankful.
Tuesday night and Wednesday, we will report the winners of the election in our local races (Gilpin and Boulder counties). It will be simple numbers and will be in print Thursday. We will congratulate those that won and we will sympathize with those that didn’t. And we will hope the people that stepped up, keep stepping up and being part of local government moving forward. And at the end of the day we will still be neighbors, and friends, and continue covering whatever comes next in the local political world.
We do have some exciting things happening behind the scenes at Mountain Vale Media, and I want to tell you all about them. But not yet. In our November 12 edition I’ll share more. I’ll introduce you to some new folks at our organization. And to some new ideas, and some old ideas we may be bringing back. And I’ll tell you about our latest news on the archive project. And so much more. Next week, another staff member will write this column as a wrap up to the election.
I’m also throwing it out there that we have a few small positions open at the paper (regular weekly contracted work). Anyone looking for a little side income can reach out to me anytime and I’ll share what we’re looking for. Any current position requires a valid drivers license, licensed vehicle, full coverage insurance, and you have to like interacting with people on a regular basis.
Other than that, I’m just going to close out with my normal reminders. The Mountain-Ear is YOUR community source for news.
