BOULDER — On September 3, for their first contest of the season, the CU Buffaloes traveled to Atlanta for a game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. CU was projected as a 6.5-point underdog.
With 42 seconds left in the contest, Buffs quarterback Julian Lewis connected with tight end Charlie Williams on a 20-yard touchdown pass to take the lead 14-13. The Yellow Jackets then drove into Colorado territory and attempted a 45-yard walk-off field goal with three seconds remaining. Crashing in from the edge with outstretched arms, defensive back Boo Carter blocked that kick to preserve a dramatic CU victory!
Looking to build on the win, the Buffaloes returned to Folsom Field on September 12 for their home opener, taking on the Weber State Wildcats. CU entered the game as 33.5-point favorites.
The “Buffs Wear White” theme gave the stadium full of enthusiastic fans the appearance and feel of a rumbling avalanche about to engulf their opponent. The slide was triggered when, on the Buffs’ first play from scrimmage, quarterback Julian Lewis threw a play-action pass to wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 68-yard touchdown. Two offensive plays later he followed that up with a 63-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Joseph Williams.
Weber State then recovered a Buffs fumble to set up a 13-yard touchdown pass of their own. The Buffaloes quickly answered with a 48-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Ernest Campbell. Score at the end of the first quarter: CU 21, Weber State 7.
A 55-yard scamper by CU tailback Micah Welch put the Buffs up by three touchdowns to begin the second quarter. With his 106 yards rushing on the day, Welch became the first 100-yard runner of the Deion Sanders era. A score by the Wildcats kept them in the game, down by two touchdowns.
Another Lewis touchdown pass to Joseph Williams and a Lewis 3-yard run into the end zone took the halftime tally to CU 45, Weber State 14.
The Buffs added a field goal in the third quarter. With the contest well in hand, CU’s backup quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne gained field experience the rest of the way and rushed for a 9-yard touchdown. Weber State scored a touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter. Final score: CU 52, Weber State 21.
Boding well for the future, it was a breakout game for freshman quarterback Julian Lewis, who amassed 366 yards through the air, connecting on 17 of his 23 attempts for a 74% completion ratio and zero interceptions. His four first-half touchdown passes were a first in the history of Colorado Buffaloes' football.
Defensive back Jah Jah Boyd led the defense with five solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Defensive end Toby Anene registered one sack. Defensive linemen Santana Hopper and Lamont Lester Jr. also had one sack apiece.
The Buff’s next home game will take place on October 3 against currently ranked #13 Texas Tech. To purchase tickets, go to cubuffs.com/sports/football.
