Bakers battle at Coal Creek Bake-Off

Cakes, pies and cookies fill hall

COAL CREEK CANYON — Cakes, cookies, and pies filled the Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association Hall on Saturday afternoon.

CCCIA Board President Norma Cassin organized the event. She told The Mountain-Ear, “The first Canyon Bake-Off was a hit! Nine entries for cake, six entries for cookies, and two entries for pie. Many came to taste what our locals whipped up, and it was all delicious."

The contestants were seated at tables along the Hall walls, while tables were placed in the middle for the tasters. Upon entering the Hall, tasters were given a ballot to score each entry from 1 to 9 for cakes, 1 to 7 for cookies and 1 to 3 for pies. They were to be scored by taste, presentation, creativity, and texture.

“It was a wonderful event," Cassin said. "We appreciate all the community support and for the bakers. Thanks so much to our official judges, Kathy Ott, Ted Ott, Joe Cuervorst, and Amber Danneman.”

Winners in each category were:

Cake: 1st place - Steven Floyd; 2nd place - Steven Floyd

Cookies: 1st place -Julie Sorlie; 2nd place - Tanya Peters

Pie: 1st place - Katie Kelehan; 2nd place - Brent Lee

The next Canyon game night is May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event is free to attend.
