BLACK HAWK — Last week, we held a lot of non-time-sensitive news to make sure we could fit all ten of the Gilpin candidate questions into one edition. Before I say anything else, I want to sincerely thank the candidates, every one of them, for submitting these questionnaires back to us. Thank you for giving people a bit of a peek into who you are and why they should vote for you.
This week, we will catch some of that news up, while balancing multiple public notices that have to print this week, new news, business stories, recent events, and our regular coverage of the Peak to Peak region.
This week we will have to hold some non-time-sensitive news again. It’s a difficult place to be, balancing the content to make sure we have something for everyone, but also making sure the time-sensitive content is published when it’s needed. Finding the balance is sometimes more difficult than others. We are running candidate profiles for the Central City Council this week.
Last Wednesday, I also made a mistake in one of the small stories I put together. And it was a BIG mistake. I put the wrong date and time in print for the upcoming Candidate Forum. There is no excuse for my mistake and I apologize. We corrected it online quickly, and I’ve been posting it on social media since I found the mistake.
The correct time and date is Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 1 - 4 p.m. and it will be held at the Old Court House in Central City. You’ll see an ad in this week’s edition and we are posting it all online as well.
Every election, The Mountain-Ear organizes these forums so the candidates can reach their constituents, especially in the rural communities we live in where many folks are not online to read all about those running for office. And more importantly they want to meet the candidates in person.
Taking part in these forums is an opportunity for the public to understand a candidate's platform. After you read the individual profiles, please consider coming to the forum to hear the candidates speak in person. So far, seven of the ten candidates have confirmed they will attend. We do not have confirmation yet from Kathleen Balfour (Assessor candidate), Tara Gillivan (Clerk & Recorder candidate), or Brenda Diehl (Treasurer candidate).
This Labor Day weekend I spent Friday home sick, but still working. We have a lot coming together right now and taking a break is not an option. Working at home, thankfully, is my best option and I can get more done in a ten hour day at home, than I can in a busy office.
Saturday I spent quite a bit of time getting maps printed and ready for delivery for our upcoming Peak to Peak Studio Tour. The tour, the fourth, includes 26 galleries or home studios. The map for the tour is going to be inserted in this week's newspapers, and it’s been distributed across the Peak to Peak from Allenspark to Central City.
We will be distributing more maps on Thursday, and getting the important signs for each location to draw people in for the individual studios. This year we are featuring at least 100 different artists among all the spots.
Sunday I delivered more of the maps and worked on catching up emails and, of course, writing this column.
On Monday I plan to work at home again, as well as Tuesday, until I have to be down the hill for an appointment. Since mid-June I have had severe vertigo and I am working to resolve it with a physical therapist. If you don’t see me out and about as much in the next few weeks, it’s likely related to this strange spinning world I have been living in.
Wednesday, of course, we get the paper to press and have our monthly in-person staff meeting. The rest of the week will be spent tying up more Studio Tour, completing billing, checking out the Ned*Ned and putting together our new pricing structure for advertising next year.
Well, I have rambled on long enough. I’ll leave you with my normal closing.
