driving down the canyon
the plains are hidden in smoke
the mountains
like a picture fading
the road winding
into something unknowable
and I feel for a moment afraid
for the future
for my lungs
for the forests
but then the sun starts to set
the sky is like spilled honey
the pines rose lit
and even the trickling river shines
