Wildfire Awareness Days comes to Nederland

BOULDER COUNTY -  The 2025 summer wildfire mitigation season kicked off with a fair at the Nederland Community Forestry Sort Yard (CFSY), called Wildfire Awareness Days.

The fair brought together in one place forestry, fire department, and wildfire mitigation professionals to answer questions from residents about various wildfire mitigation programs.

Participants included the Nederland and Timberline Fire Protection Districts, the National Forest Service, Boulder County Wildfire Partners, and the Boulder Watershed Collective. Booths were set up by the different organizations and staffed with professionals who were available to discuss their services with the public.

Mary Sanders from Wildfire Partners said that the fair was a chance for Boulder County residents to learn about the benefits of getting a home assessment and earning a certification from Wildfire Partners that their property met Boulder County mitigation standards.

Sanders said that Wildfire Partners have made over 4,000 assessments, and more than 1,000 properties have been certified.

While certification doesn’t guarantee home insurance coverage, Sanders said that it can be a key factor in getting or keeping home insurance. Sanders estimates that up to 50% of residents applying for an assessment do so for insurance reasons.

Boulder Watershed Collective had a booth with information and brochures on hand about their efforts to reintroduce beavers in Boulder County drainages to improve watershed quality.

Timberline and Nederland fire districts had staff on hand and were recruiting volunteers.

Michael Agena from Boulder County Parks and Open Space was on hand to discuss the proposed fuel reduction project for the Nederland sorting yard. The project will develop a 100-foot buffer zone around the yard and perform additional thinning on the rest of the 30-acre property, which will help protect some at-risk Limber Pine.

The fair also sponsored some awareness activities and offered hot dogs and refreshments.

The next Wildfire Awareness Days will be at the Meeker CFSY in Allenspark, at 8200 Highway 7 on June 14, 2025. For more information about the event contact Wildfire Partners at 303-441-1420 or info@wildfirepartners.org.
