Vacancy on Gilpin School Board

Posted

GILPIN COUNTY - The Gilpin County RE-1 School District Board of Education accepted the resignation of Tami Velasquez at their June 3, 2025, board meeting, and declared a vacancy in the school board that needs to be filled with an interim appointment.

This appointment will be until the next regular biennial school election on November 4, 2025. The office holder for the remaining two years of Velasquez’s term, which expires in 2027, will be the winner of the 2025 school election for that office.

The Board discussed the eligibility criteria for this appointment. The deadline for applying is June 13, 2025.

Superintendent MacKenzie would provide every candidate with a list of questions that the Board will ask during interviews, which will take place during the June 17, 2025, board meeting. The deliberations and vote will also take place during that public meeting.

An intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Gilpin County Clerk and Recorder to conduct the biennial school election was unanimously approved and Superintendent David MacKenzie reviewed the choices for candidates running for one of the three offices.

Two offices will be for the regular four-year terms while the other office will be for two. Candidates must declare when filing that they are seeking either one of the four-year terms or the two-year term. If there are no candidates for a position, then the Board will proceed after the election with appointing a replacement.

In other business, Superintendent David MacKenzie said that the sewer project is moving forward towards Hughesville Road, which is about the halfway point.

The District Accountability Committee (DAC) finished the year with a full complement of members and MacKenzie presented their report covering the 2024/2025 school year.

Summer work projects include regular summer cleaning, maintenance and some repainting. MacKenzie made it a point that the senior handprints on the fourth floor were not going to be repainted.

The Board also unanimously approved a contract with Integrated Systems Installers, Inc., DBA ISI Technology to complete the ADA door installation, the key card access system, and the installation of common area Lock Down Buttons. The contract is not to exceed $32,000 and the work is to be finished over the summer.

The next RE-1 Board or Education meeting will be on June 17, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the school board meeting room.

The Board will interview the eligible candidates for the board position at that time and vote on the interim appointment. There will also be a presentation by John Cutler & Associates, CPA, of the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 audits.

The agenda and documents for this meeting are on the RE-1 website (gilpin.k12.co.us) under the Board of Education Agendas for June 3, 2025.
