ROLLINSVILLE — A disabled train temporarily shut down Tolland Road at the east railroad crossing in Tolland on Monday, July 20, leaving some people stranded on the west side of the crossing for several hours before the road reopened later in the afternoon.
The Gilpin County Sheriff's Office first announced the closure after a disabled train stopped across the roadway west of Mammoth Gulch Road. At the time, there was no estimate for when the crossing would reopen.
The Sheriff's Office said its dispatch center notified the Gilpin Ambulance Authority and Timberline Fire Protection District so emergency responders could adjust their response plans while the crossing was blocked.
Officials also said some people were unable to travel through the area between the Moffat Tunnel and the railroad crossing while the train remained stopped.
The Gilpin County Office of Emergency Management worked with Union Pacific to resolve the issue, and motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible.
At about 3 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff's Office announced the disabled train had been moved and Tolland Road had reopened at the east railroad crossing west of Mammoth Gulch Road.
The Sheriff's Office thanked the public for its patience and cooperation during the temporary closure.
