MEAD – An annual highlight on the schedule is the Three League Meet where three different leagues compete in track and field.
This year’s event was held on Saturday, May 2 in Mead. The leagues represented were Granite Peaks, Mile High, and Foothills. Three local teams were there: Gilpin and Clear Creek of the Mile High League, and Nederland from the Foothills League.
Clear Creek shines
The Clear Creek Golddiggers had a good showing, placing well in several categories. Katelyn Averitt in the Girls’ Long Jump and Jordan Nichols in the Girls’ 1600 Meters each took home fifth place. Zephyrus Schuessler was fifth in the Boys’ 800 Meters.
The Boys’ 4x200 Meter relay team came in fourth. The Golddiggers’ boys cranked it up a notch with a third-place finish in the 4x800 Relay. Three was Clear Creek’s lucky number, as shotputter Nathan Guerro, high hurdler Titus Canelos, and long jumper Kiera Ginter were all third-place finishers.
In the Boys’ 4x400 Meter Relay, Clear Creek sped to a second-place result. Noah Windley’s 37-foot, 4-inch distance in the Triple Jump also took second place at the meet.
Eagles strong
Taurean Paxton of the Gilpin Eagles followed up last week’s win at Ault in the 800 Meters with a seventh-place finish. Landon Church ran his personal best in the 100 Meters with a time of 11.87, good for sixth place.
School record holder Michael Reisner-Ledbetter went 5 feet, six inches, in the high jump to claim third place. Zoey Paul also secured third in the Girls’ Shot Put.
Relay races continued to be a strong suit for the Eagles. In the Boys’ 4x100 Meters, Ryan Marr, Jack Fisher, Michael Reisner-Ledbetter, and Landon Church set a new school record; and Church, Marr, Fisher, and Corbin Everhart set a school record in the 4x200 Meters. Taurean Paxton, Dylan Bleiler, Hank Thompson, and Vinny Schoell shattered the school record by six seconds that they had set in the 4x800 a week before—that’s three new records in one day!
Panthers dominate
To open the competition at 8 a.m., representing the Nederland Panthers and with limited practice this season, Benjamin Weber ran 11:01.86 in the Boys’ 3200 Meters to grab third place. Lily Troy placed third in the Girls’ 400 Meters with a time of 1:13.70.
Of the three teams from our area to participate in the Three League Meet, Nederland fared the best with a second-place overall finish in the Girls’ Division.
Thirty-one feet, one and a half inches is how far River LeMaster sailed in the Girls’ Triple Jump. She was awarded second place. The Girls’ 4x800 Relay team of Amika Begin, Abby Hess, Lily Troy, and Libby Chandler did the same. Chandler also won second place in the 3200 Meters.
There were three first place finishers for the Panthers: Amika Begin, Isla Harmon, and River LeMaster.
Begin outpaced the field in the Girls’ 1600 and 3200 Meters. Harmon took top honors in the 400 Meters and LeMaster won the High Jump with a height of 5 feet, two and a half inches. Far outleaping the other entrants, she set both a school and meet record!
“Great performances all the way around” is how Coach Kathy Butler described the team’s efforts and feels that several of her athletes stand a good chance of qualifying for the Colorado State Track and Field Championships beginning on May 14 in Lakewood.
