GILPIN COUNTY — Another basketball season is about to wrap up for the Gilpin Girls Basketball Team. Consistently putting out a great product year after year, their record stood at 12-6 heading into their home matchup against the Front Range Christian Academy Falcons on February 17.
In a deft defensive display, the Lady Eagles’ "man-to-man" full-court press gave the Falcons fits. The Eagles hit four 3-pointers on their way to a 26-0 lead to end the first quarter.
Substituting freely for the rest of the game, they outscored Front Range Christian in the second and third quarters on their way to a convincing 56-20 victory.
For seniors Elise Vincent and Adele Fisher, it was their next-to-last home basketball game of their high school careers. Both of them were honored after the game during Senior Night for the contributions they’d made to the team and school.
On the evening, Adele Fisher registered 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Elise Vincent played what her coach described as “her best all-around game of the year,” finishing with 29 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 1 block.
For Head Coach Katura Atherton, it was especially difficult saying goodbye to her seniors. She had coached Fisher and Vincent every year since they were in fifth grade. “It’s been amazing to see them grow as athletes and individuals. They’ve been great girls to coach,” said Atherton. “I’ll miss them.”
Three nights later, the Eagles hung a loss on Dawson by a score of 49-35, putting Gilpin’s record at 14-6. As part of the Mile High League Tournament, the Lady Eagles have a road game against Union Colony on February 24, a home game against Estes Park on the 26th, then face SkyView in an away game on February 28.
