GILPIN COUNTY — It’s no secret that the Gilpin Boys Basketball Team improved by leaps and bounds this season. They scored over 50 points on several occasions and even won a few games—something fans hadn’t witnessed in recent years.
Their February 17 home game against the Front Range Christian Falcons was just another example of how far they’ve come.
The boys played inspired basketball and shot well in the first quarter. In the second quarter they outscored their opponent, taking a 28-26 lead going into halftime.
The Eagles hung with the Falcons in the third quarter, not giving an inch. Score at the end of three quarters: Front Range 42, Gilpin 38. Falcon shooters got hot in the fourth quarter to snatch victory from the Eagles by a score of Front Range 71, Gilpin 52.
Seemingly within reach, a victory would have been the ideal outcome. But short of that, it was good to see the team playing competitive basketball again.
Part of the Eagles’ success has been due to the play of their seniors. On this evening, everyone had assembled to pay tribute to the four of them during Senior Night.
Landon Church: A gritty competitor and the Eagles’ leading rebounder, Church battled every second of every game.
Vinny Schoell: As one of the captains, Schoell was a go-to leader with great catch-and-shoot abilities.
Mason Sechler: An outstanding all-around athlete who possesses exceptional court vision and puts his teammates first.
Ben Bushey: A force in the paint, Bushey became an outstanding player in all phases of the game.
Head Coach Will Lorenz credited the team for their constant improvement, always showing up, and never quitting.
