School bus safety - STOP means STOP

Posted

PEAK TO PEAK - School has started in our communities and the school buses are on the roads. On the buses are elementary through high school students. They are someone’s children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends.

Safety is the most important aspect of transportation. It is extremely important for everyone to understand that safety is an attitude. We all need to understand the rules of the road around school buses...always.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children are much safer taking a bus to and from school than traveling by car. School buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road; they’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries; and in every state, stop-sign arm laws protect children from other motorists.

School buses are designed so that they’re highly visible and include safety features such as flashing red lights, cross-view mirrors and stop-sign arms. They also include protective seating, high crush standards, and rollover protection features.

In Colorado, laws protect students who are getting off and on a school bus by making it illegal for drivers to pass a school bus while it is dropping off or picking up passengers, regardless of the direction of approach.

STOP means STOP!

Under Colorado law, if a school bus is stopped, its stop sign is extended and its red lights are on, drivers are required to stop.

The Boulder Valley School District Transportation Department welcomes compliments or concerns via email at transportation@bvsd.org, or call one of the transportation terminals and ask to speak to a supervisor: Boulder terminal 720-561-5125, Nederland terminal 720-561-6241.

Please, keep the students and drivers safe this school year.
