GOLDEN GATE CANYON — It was a tight fit inside the Golden Gate Canyon Grange on September 19, 2026. About 230 people showed up for the Golden Gate Auxiliary’s annual pig roast, filling the tables and keeping the room busy with merry chatter.
The food was barbecue pork sandwiches with coleslaw, potato salad, and baked beans.
This was the 12th year for the fundraiser, which raises money for the Golden Gate Fire Protection District. Auxiliary President Sally Shiner said they expected to bring in around $15,000 this year.
There was a lot to bid on. Tables were covered with jewelry, artwork, quilts, wine, gift certificates, pet items, and other donated goods. Giant gift baskets ranged in value from about $100 to $430.
Donations came from businesses and residents in Golden, Evergreen, Idaho Springs, Black Hawk, and Central City.
The auxiliary pays for things that aren't covered in the fire district's regular budget. This year, that has included drone training, half the cost of a chipper, firefighter boots, and additional training.
“It’s fun,” Shiner said of the event. “The donations are superb.” And so was the turnout to support Golden Gate's firefighters.
