I hear the footsteps comin’, they’re comin’ round the bend
And I ain’t seen a backyard since I don’t know when
I’m stuck in Boulder Valley, and time keeps draggin’ on
But those footsteps keep a-comin, and I'm here all alone
When I was just a puppy, my mama licked my head
Always be a good dog, don’t stray alone, she said
But my mama’s gone and left me, I’m waiting here alone
When I think of mama this evening, I lift my head and howl
I bet there’s puppies eatin' in a fancy ol’ backyard
They’re probably lappin’ Evian and chewing pork rib bones
