Subject: Urgent need for prompt cleanup, transparency, and environmental oversight following the
Lakeview Fire

As residents of Nederland, we are writing to express serious and immediate concerns regarding the
aftermath of the recent fire and the ongoing presence of toxic debris at the destroyed shopping center
site.

The community is deeply troubled by the public health risks, environmental impact, and prolonged
blight in the heart of our town.

1. Enforcement of Prompt Cleanup

We request confirmation as to whether Boulder County or the Town of Nederland intends to enforce a
prompt, professionally managed cleanup of the burned structures and debris. The current state of the
site poses

– Public health risks from ash, soot, heavy metals, melted plastics, and potentially hazardous building
materials

– Windborne exposure at high altitude

– Environmental risks to soil and the Boulder Creek watershed

– Visual and emotional distress to residents and visitors

2. Publication of Cleanup Plan and Schedule

We respectfully demand the public release of a cleanup plan, timeline, and environmental standards,
contractor identification, and community notification protocols.

3. Engagement with CDPHE

We request active involvement from CDPHE’s Hazardous Materials & Waste Management Division,
including oversight, guidance, and public communication.

4. Reference to HB24-1315

We request alignment with Colorado’s HB24-1315 remediation standards to ensure timely, rigorous
cleanup.

5. Soil, Dust, and Air Testing

We request baseline, ongoing, and post-cleanup environmental testing with publicly released results.

Conclusion

This fire has left a significant wound at the center of our community. We ask for timely action, transparency, and environmental oversight. We look forward to your response addressing enforcement measures, cleanup plans, standards, CDPHE involvement, and environmental testing.

Sincerely,

Concerned Residents of Nederland, Colorado
