NMSHS instrumentalists perform Winter Concert

NEDERLAND — The sweet sounds of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion filled the Nederland Middle-Senior High School Auditorium on Tuesday, December 16, as fifth through twelfth grade students in band and orchestra performed in the 2025 Winter Concert.

The high school orchestra opened the concert with "Let It Go" from Frozen. Next, they played "A Very Respectable Hobbit" with senior Eliza Brundege on violin as the soloist.

The youngest orchestra players (fifth graders) played "Eye of the Tiger," while the sixth graders played "Impulse."

Christine Mallory, Nederland Middle-High School band and orchestra teacher, announced that all of the high school orchestra students attended the Boulder Valley Honors Orchestra. Afterwards, the group played a fantastic piece titled "Orange Jam."

The sixth graders and middle level orchestra joined the high school to play the holiday song "Bells and Buccaneers." Then the middle level and high school orchestra closed their part of the concert with "Toy Symphony," enhanced with some unique and fun instruments like a train whistle, rattle, and a rubber chicken.

In a shift in mood, the fifth grade band played "We Will Rock You," after which the fifth and sixth grade bands together played the holiday tune "Wenceslas Variance." The sixth grade band moved back to the world of rock with "Dr. Rock."

The middle level band played "Santa the Barbarian," while NMSHS science teacher Dan Wade provided narration. Appropriately, the middle level and high school bands then entertained the audience with "Bizarre."

The high school band ended the concert with Toto’s "Africa," and with "Bell Carol Rock" to put us in the holiday spirit.

It is a joy going to middle and high school instrumental concerts. It is a challenge for the students to learn an instrument, to keep practicing and playing the instrument for years, but the payoff is that there are many benefits to being part of music programs.

Hats off to the students and parents involved. Hats off to NMSHS instrumental music teacher Christine Mallory and those at the school who support the music program and keep it going for the students.

Music is critical to our lives, keeping us tuned to the rhythms and joys of the world, and of this season.
