NedRINK opens for the 2025 season

Outdoor ice skating in the mountains

NEDERLAND – On New Year’s Day 2023, when I covered NedRINK’s much-anticipated opening, I noticed a stoic woman holding the hands of her two children on either side of her as they slowly did laps around the skating rink. Juxtaposed against the jubilance of the other skaters, it struck me unusual that none of them seemed to be having any fun.

This season, with two years of practice under their belts, those kids have cut the apron strings and spread their wings. The boy can be seen racing from one end of the rink to the other at breakneck speed and his older sister is gracefully gliding, developing figure skating moves. There are now smiles on all of their faces including Mom’s.

NedRINK is up and running as of January 2, beating last year’s opening date by a full 10 days. A sure cure for cabin fever, the Open Skate was as popular as ever with skaters of all ability levels in attendance.

Partaking in a pleasurable afternoon recreating outdoors, there were familiar folks and some new ones. Olga Hunter was visiting friends in Estes Park. On the way back there from a morning of sightseeing in Eldorado Canyon, she noticed the ice rink sign on Peak to Peak Highway and decided to stop in.

Born in Russia and a former Colorado resident now living in San Antonio, Texas, she and her husband enjoy skating at different ice rinks around the world when they travel and were happy to have added another to their list.

Ice-skating details

Skate rentals are conveniently available for between $5 and $10 a pair. For the youngest, ice-skating trainers that look like aluminum walkers with runners kept them steady as they gained confidence and became acquainted with rudimentary skating technique. Several of the apparatus are onsite for use at no charge.

To speed up the learning curve and give neophytes’ tailbones a break, a lesson or two is the route taken by many of them. You could do no better than receiving volunteer Mary Joyce as a teacher, who has taught scores of kids and adults how to skate over the years in Nederland. Like everything else at NedRINK, including the daily pass priced at $12 or less, the $15 per hour lessons are a bargain. The friendly relaxed atmosphere at the ice rink is free.

NedRINK Location

Located at 500 Indian Peaks Drive, Nederland, Colorado, NedRINK is open seven days a week. Sessions are weather dependent, so check out their live webcam and view the schedule which is constantly updated at www.nedicerink.wixsite.com.
