Ned Library hosts summer reading wrap-up

Families, enthusiastic readers gather to celebrate a season full of stories

NEDERLAND — The Nederland Community Library is a truly treasured place, creating precious memories for people of all ages, especially young readers. Making kids feel connected to the books they read and developing a life-long passion for reading is something that the library prides itself on.

Sometimes remembering to get lost in a story is hard during the summer, as Jessie Ansari, assistant director of the Nederland Library, put it: keeping kids engaged in literature during the summer is an excellent way to “unearth your love for reading and stop the summer slide."

It was the library’s summer wrap up party on September 2, and although the persistent rain may have tried to get in the way, it did not stop the ecstatic energy that everyone had for celebrating reading and having fun.  It is so special and refreshing to witness how happy and excited these kids were about enjoying reading and celebrating it with the people around them.

Kids have fun and dance along together to live music by Bonnie Coberly and Travis Greenlee of The Blue Tutu Band, who created lovely family friendly tunes for all to enjoy.  The kids also got the chance to participate in a fun scavenger hunt, with bits and pieces hidden all across the library.

This wrap up party comes at a bittersweet time in American history, as the country honors the passing of the great children's literature advocate Dolly Parton, who once said: “You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children”  and showed the world just how magical books can be with her Imagination Library.

“Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up, you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.” - Dolly Parton.

Hopefully a love for reading is something that will carry on through the rest of these children's lives. The Nederland Community Library has shown that reading does not have to be dull. It truly is something special that not only brings you closer to yourself, but to the people around you.

At the wrap-up party, everyone danced together, laughed together, and made new friends. This is exactly what the community is about.
