NEDERLAND — The threat of rain may have changed the nature of the evening, but the Nederland Community Library’s (NCL) This Land Is Your Jam event rocked on indoors, turning the typically quiet space into a more rockin’ venue, perfect for Americana sing-alongs, hula-hooping, face painting, and plenty of red, white, and blue.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the NCL had planned a Flag Day concert in their pristine outdoor space, not only to present a locals-centric celebration, but to take advantage of the clear skies and bright sunshine we’d been having up here in the mountains.
Unfortunately, dark clouds and rain attempted to put a damper on the night, but with some quick thinking and helping hands, the NCL team perfectly pivoted to an indoor concert, and promoted dancing among the bookshelves.
The Blue Tutu Band played classic tunes for the crowd, including the foot-tap-inducing “Big Rock Candy Mountain” and “Trail of Oregon.” They centered their performance on the ethos of approaching life with a childlike wonder, and navigating the world as if searching for hidden treasures.
Tim Rehder crooned to the crowd and transported them to another time with some classic lap steel guitar, using fingerpicks to create the vintage sound of old American bluegrass.
And Shakina Ma, with her mother by her side, belted out soulful hits that got the crowd moving. Backed by fellow Nederland locals The Pineytops, Shakina used her amazing voice to spread the message of living in harmony with our planet.
It became a full family affair as Shakina’s sister Sarah joined to sing backup while their mother, musician Anna Coronna, delivered a powerful performance of the John Prine classic, popularized by Bonnie Raitt, “Angel from Montgomery,” which struck the crowd, sending them right back to special places held in their fondest memories.
As the music reverberated throughout the library—showcasing how the designed-for-quiet space makes for one of the best musical venues in town—children ran excitedly about, clutching in their hands the red, white, and blue frosted cupcakes provided by Canyon Coffee.
Kids’ smiling faces, painted and adorned with patriotic splashes of color and glitter, were more than enough to prove to the clouds that they could not ruin a good time from being had in Nederland!
Many thanks to NCL Director Elektra Greer, and to all library staff and volunteers who contributed to making the This Land Is Your Jam event the successful first of what will hopefully become an annual celebration.
