GILPIN COUNTY — Having compiled a 9-4 record heading into their February 6 home basketball game against Dayspring Christian Academy, the Gilpin Lady Eagles were intent on winning the matchup. It was the beginning of a brutal stretch in their schedule that includes five games in seven days. Head Coach Katura Atherton predicted that the contest would be “competitive.”
Dominating the first quarter by a score of 19-13, Gilpin shredded Dayspring’s man-to-man defense, scoring points off of transitions and creating general havoc for the opponent’s offense. Gilpin shot 65% from the field on 2-pointers.
Each team registered 13 points in the second quarter to bring the tally at halftime to Gilpin 32, Dayspring Christian 26.
Gilpin’s defense continued to play well in the second half. The girls had more steals, fewer turnovers, and more points off of turnovers than Dayspring for the game, but couldn’t get their shots to fall consistently during the last half of play. Final score: Dayspring Christian 52, Gilpin 38.
Freshman Amelia Bushey led the Eagles with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Adele Fisher scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds. Elise Vincent recorded 7 points, 6 rebounds, 7 steals, and 1 block. Jennifer Rodriguez-Jimenez added 5 points.
Disappointed but undeterred, the very next night against Clear Creek in Evergreen, Gilpin rebounded nicely from the loss with a 57-15 victory.
