GILPIN COUNTY – Winless in their first two outings of the season, the Gilpin County Eagles Soccer Team needed a victory entering their March 31 home match against the Union Colony Timberwolves. That was exactly what they delivered.
At 28:53 of the first half, Adele Fisher’s corner kick found Lola Keller, who booted the ball in for Gilpin’s first goal of the contest. Just over three minutes later, Gretchen Osteboe raced half the field past the Timberwolves’ defense for the Eagles’ second score. With 1:39 remaining in the first half, a Union Colony throw-in bounced off one of their players. Adele Fisher was there to clean it up for another Eagles goal. Score at halftime: Gilpin 3, Union Colony 0.
Pleased with their performance up to that point but far from complacent, early in the second half, Elise Vincent scored an unassisted goal. Halfway through the final period, a Vincent shot was blocked then rebounded by Gretchen Osteboe for her second goal of the day. Final score: Gilpin 5, Union Colony 0.
Happy to be back in the win column, Head Coach Sunny Vincent called it a fun match. “As our main objectives, I wanted our team to play their game and be in control, make sharp passes, and to communicate with each other. The girls achieved those goals to give us the advantage.”
Gretchen Osteboe registered two goals and one steal during the match. Adele Fisher had one goal, one assist, and three steals. Lola Keller recorded one goal and made two steals. Elise Vincent had one goal and a steal. Keirra Ferrantte stole the ball six times. Molly Brennan and Riley Edwards each had four steals. Goalkeeper Jadie DiMauro pitched a shutout with four saves.
