GILPIN COUNTY — The January 6, 2026, meeting of the Gilpin County RE1 School District Board of Education (BOE) was called to order by Board President Joe Marr at 7 p.m. All BOE members were in attendance. The meeting was very brief and succinct.
The BOE’s standard opening procedures began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Superintendent David MacKenzie’s rollcall, board member Joe Stranaly reading the Mission Statement, Secretary and Treasurer Jill Peterson reading the Vision Statement, and finally, Vice-President Kirsten Goodlett moving the agenda to be approved.
There were no congratulations or celebrations announced or Principal/Teacher/Student presentations, as none was present at the meeting.
No member of the public was present to make comments; no reports or old or new business were presented.
MacKenzie noted under Future Agendas that Business Analyst Joe Tinnuci will report on the revised June 2025 – 2026 budget. Further business for the January 20 meeting will be a second reading of Policy Revisions.
Marr announced the designation of places for posting Notice of Board Meetings.
The BOE then broke out for an Executive Session to “confer with the school district’s attorney for the purpose of receiving legal advice on the following specific legal questions: interpretation and guidance concerning board member legal roles, responsibilities, authority and extent delegation of authority, ethical principles and board conduct, and potential liability and defenses for board member actions under state and federal law, and compliance with district polices, the Colorado Open Meetings Law…and the Colorado Open Records Act…avoiding legal claims from the use of social media, and legal requirements for dealing with student staff and public complaints.”
The Board’s attorney was present to participate in the executive session and the meeting adjourned after the session.
The next meeting of the Gilpin BOE will be held at 7 p.m. on January 20, 2026, in the Board of Education Meeting Room at 10595 Highway 119, Black Hawk.
