GILPIN COUNTY — The Gilpin County Board of Education held two meetings on May 4.
The first meeting was a public forum to address any questions or concerns from the public regarding the 2026-2027 Adopted Budget.
The second meeting immediately followed the first, with the Board voting unanimously to approve on second reading the 26-27 Adopted Budget, the 25-26 Supplemental Budget, and all associated appropriation resolutions and funds.
Next year’s budget
The purpose of the first meeting was to engage with the public about the proposed budget for the coming school year. It was designated as a Study and Dialogue Work Session. The District’s business analyst, Joe Tinucci, was on hand to answer questions regarding accounting aspects of the current 25-26 budget or the 26-27 budget.
The format required that anyone wishing to ask questions about the budget needed to show up in person or submit a form with their question ahead of time. The spreadsheets containing all of the details for the 25-26 and 26-27 budgets were available to the public in the Board of Education Agenda.
Superintendent David MacKenzie said that at the time of the meeting no one had submitted a form question. There were no in-person participants during the half hour that the work session was open.
After the public forum concluded, the Board convened their regularly scheduled meeting.
The Board went through 14 votes to approve on second reading the 25-26 Supplemental Budget, the 26-27 Adopted Budget, and all the ancillary funds. All 14 votes were approved unanimously.
Superintendent’s report
In his report, MacKenzie updated the Board on the progress of the sewer connection project. He is still waiting on final specifications before issuing requests for bids. The project is still scheduled to be completed before the next school year at a projected additional cost of about $700,000.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be on May 18 at 7 p.m. in the school boardroom. The District Accountability Committee Year End Report will be presented and vote on 2026/2027 Fee Schedules.
