GILPIN COUNTY – Through 12 games so far this season, it has been an up and down year for the Lady Eagles Soccer Team. On April 27 at home, they took on the Addenbrooke Classical Academy Mustangs in what promised to be an exciting matchup.
The Mustangs struck first at 23:40 of the first half to go up 1-0. Three minutes and twenty seconds later, Gilpin’s Gretchen Osteboe evened the score at one apiece. Addenbrooke added another goal with 4:08 remaining to bring the tally to 2-1 in favor of the Mustangs at halftime.
Shaping up to be the kind of match that we expected, at the beginning of the final period, Gretchen Osteboe scored her second goal of the afternoon to tie the game. Addenbrooke would score once more to claim a 3-2 victory.
Gretchen Osteboe was the Eagles’ top performer with two goals scored. Katie Brennan recorded 6 steals. Adele Fisher and Amelia Bushey each had 4 steals. Leo Simpson-Molochnick registered 3 steals. Goalkeeper Jadie DiMauro had 13 saves to her credit.
Before the match, during Senior Day ceremonies, Gilpin’s seven seniors were honored for their dedication to the team and school. Head Coach Joe Wuchter shared some of their contributions and future plans:
He said, "Adele Fisher has been one of our most skilled players when it comes to ball control and is clutch when setting the soccer ball. She has scored 4 goals and dished out 5 assists so far this season. She will be attending CSU next year and studying biochemistry.
"Elise Vincent," he said, "is our center forward. Her speed and athleticism make her a constant threat to break through and score. She’s had some of our most memorable goals in our short history, including the game winner against Fountain Valley last year during the first round of the playoffs. She plans on attending Colorado Mesa University to study exercise science.
"Jadie DiMauro plays goalkeeper and has been critical to our success for the last three seasons. Her effort to improve in practice through some grueling drills has been key to her development. You have to have a certain attitude to play goalkeeper as well as Jadie does. Her fearlessness had made her one of the best goalkeepers in the area. She plans on working after graduation and pursuing a career in cosmetology.
"Possessing great talent, Katie and Molly Brennan have both been tenacious defenders for the last three seasons. They helped solidify the center of our field this year, and are skilled at running down opponents, tackling, and clearing the ball. Each of them plans on attending college online, pursuing degrees in business and possibly another field of study, while they continue their passion for rodeo.
"Leo Simpson-Molochnick has been an important addition to our team this year. She joined us when our roster was very thin. Exemplifying leadership, she has been instrumental down the stretch during critical minutes with her effort and hustle.
"Lola Keller has played midfielder and defender for us this season and has adapted to different scenarios. Her versatility makes her a threat to score and be an effective defender. She plans on eventually opening her own salon after graduation.”
