24th Annual DOJoe Memorial Race

What goes up must come down

ELDORA MOUNTAIN RESORT — On Saturday, April 4, the DOJoe Memorial Race was held for the 24th time. Over the years, more than $70,000 has been raised through the event and donated to Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which provides daily avalanche forecasts and safety guidelines.

The usual uphill-downhill course had to be shortened this year due to limited terrain available as a result of a lower-than-average snowpack. The 60 entrants headed up Bonanza Trail first, negotiated a series of switchbacks at the top, and then whipped down a dual giant slalom course. It would take two trips around to complete the race.

There were real and mythical animals among the costumed participants, including a beaver, penguin, giraffe, dragon, and unicorn. Best costume winner Andrea Wrobel came dressed as a character from the children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. The Abominable Snowman, ballerinas in tutus, and Elmo from "Sesame Street" were also in attendance.

Racers mingled at the bottom of the course, rejoicing in the experience and cheering on the last entrants to cross the finish line. Once they had, everyone adjourned to the West Wing Deck where a giant raffle would take place and top finishers announced.

It was, after all, Retro Weekend and the ‘80s cover band The Goonies kept people entertained with hits from that era. Blondie’s “One Way or Another” was a highlight. For many, ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” brought back memories of a bygone time. The party continued for hours.

Splitboarders Brandon Rohrbaugh finished in 15:21.1 for the men and Karyn Stockdale at 46:17.6 for the women.
