DENVER – Every year it seems that track and field records are broken at Gilpin County High School. This season, it was the school record in the Boys' 4x800 Meter Relay that fell by the wayside at the Terry Amundson Track Meet in Beyers on April 14.
It wouldn’t take the Eagles long to better that mark at the Denver West Cowboy Invitational at All-City Stadium in Denver on Saturday, April 25. Shaving well over a second off the recently-set record, Taurean Paxton, Dylan Bleiler, Hank Thompson, and Vinny Schoell are now the all-time fastest Eagles in that event with a time of 9:53.44. Because of being sidelined from undergoing oral surgery, it was Bleiler’s first competition of the year.
Zoey Paul provided support in the Girls' Shot Put, Long Jump, and High Jump. Cadince Willis also competed in the High Jump, but slid off the mat on one of her attempts and suffered a mild concussion and had to withdraw from the Girls' 200 Meters. She is fine and expects to return to action at the Eagles' next meet.
At the Cowboy Invitational, freshman Michael Reisner-Ledbetter was another standout performer for Gilpin. Having been taught the fundamentals merely a week before, it was Reisner-Ledbetter’s first time competing in the Boys Long Jump. He leapt 18 feet, 1 inch, good for 7th place out of 43 entrants.
A second strong event for Reisner-Ledbetter was the Boys' High Jump. A physical and psychological barrier for high jumpers is clearing the bar when it is set higher than their own height. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches, he jumped 5 feet 8 inches, closing in on another school record.
