Walk in a Forest Targeted for "Fuel Reduction" Near Gold Hill: On Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m., Dr. Thomas Veblen, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at CU Boulder, and Dr. Karl Ford, environmental scientist, will lead an interpretive walk through a parcel of the Roosevelt National Forest five miles west of Gold Hill, slated for "fuel reduction" by the U.S. Forest Service. On this 2-hour, half mile easy walk, Dr. Veblen and Dr. Ford, two of the leading scientific experts on wildfire and forests in Colorado, will address multiple important questions regarding Colorado's Proposition 137 on the ballot this upcoming election. Cash Mine - 3rd Level Mining, Milling and Gold Ore Microscopy: This gold-silver-telluride mine, located in the Gold Hill Mining District of Boulder County, has a rich history. Placer gold was first discovered in the area in 1859 at Gold Run, whose watershed includes Cash Gulch. The gold-silver-telluride veins were identified much later, with the claim staked in 1872. During the program, you’ll learn more about the mine’s history and the mineralogy of its ores. Winnie the Pooh Birthday Party: 100 Acres Wood is coming to Nederland Library! Bring a stuffy and drop by to enjoy self-serve party stations. Local crafters and artists have been busy creating a wonderful assortment of unique and wonderful items, including home and holiday decor, horseshoe art, jewelry, pottery, homemade pickles, purses, welded metal art, furniture fashioned from pine beetle wood, soaps and lotions, table runners, handmade fabric dragons for your little princess or prince on your list, wooden toys/crafts and much more. Fall changes in mountain communities: Join MRS Director Scott Taylor and MRS Graduate Research Assistant Will Anderson for a guided walk at INSTAAR's Mountain Research Station (MRS). We'll be keeping an eye out for the less-frequently observed fall changes in the mountains. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and will last for about 2 hours. We only have space for 20 people. CCCIA Oktoberfest: Enjoy an evening of beer, food, music, and games with your Coal Creek Canyon neighbors. Dinner includes bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, pickles, and strudel. Veggie brats are available, and there will be hot dogs for kids. Tickets are $12 for CCCIA members, $15 for non-members, and $8 for kids. Great American Composers at Lincoln Hills: Celebrate the United States 250th with a concert at Lincoln Hills.
