GILPIN COUNTY — The only agenda item on the Gilpin County RE-1 School District Board of Education meeting on June 15 was an executive session with the District’s attorney regarding the contract with ESCO Construction Company.
Board President Joe Marr announced the executive session for the purpose of receiving legal advice pursuant to state law. Richard Bump from Caplan and Earnest met virtually with the Board and Superintendent David MacKenzie to discuss potential legal claims involving the District’s Sanitary Interconnect Project, the contractor ESCO Construction, and the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The session’s focus was on the District’s rights and options under the construction contract and potential claims, defenses, and strategies.
Prior to going into executive session, MacKenzie announced the District had received a grant to hire a social worker for three years to provide emotional and social learning support for students and staff.
MacKenzie said the District will continue over the summer to proceed with the bidding for the next phase of the Interconnect Project.
The next board meeting will be on August 3 at 7 p.m. which will be the start of the 2026/2027 school year. The meeting will be a Study and Dialogue Work Session to discuss Health, Dental, and Vision Employee Benefits.
