Second Chance

Deb D’Andrea, Nederland.  All of my dogs have been rescues, having come to me from different places. Tiki and her siblings were pulled out of a bad situation by animal control when they were seven weeks old. I don’t know the specifics, but I do know that her mother had died and the puppies were brought to a safe home to be adopted out.

Bear was thirteen weeks old when I received a call from an Australian Shepherd breeder asking if I wanted her and her sister. He hadn’t been able to sell them, knew my reputation for working with the herding breeds, and said I could have them. I happily brought both into my family, Bear always by my side; and Baci now with my ex-husband.

Sally is my most recent rescue, having joined the pack four years ago this coming March. She was the biggest unknown, as she had been chased by animal control for four months, captured, and then put on death row for being too shy. She was deathly scared of humans and bringing her into my home, I had no idea of her history. No idea how old she was, if she was trained, if she was friendly with other dogs, kids, or people. I didn’t know if she was sick, had food or animal aggression or allergies, no one knew her past. This was her second chance.

Over the past three and a half years, she has shone herself to be a shining star, a loving companion, and a wonderful addition to the pack. I feel fortunate to have her by my side; sometimes so close I trip over her, but that’s okay, I couldn’t imagine life without her.

Working with rescues isn’t always easy, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. If you’re looking for a pet to add to your family, I highly recommend visiting a local shelter or rescue group. There are many pets in need of forever homes, especially after the fires and floods in surrounding states. Many older and senior dogs would welcome a warm bed by the fire, a loving family, and a place to call home. Please consider adopting one in need.
