Annie Thayer and Tracy Brewer, Nederland. The spring reception for Art at the Center on May 28 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. will feature artist demos AND a silent auction. The reception is sponsored by the High Peaks Art Festival.
Two of the four demos will be interactive, so come join the fun and bring home your own creation! All are welcome to experience the creative process, either by watching and/or doing. If you ever wanted to try your hand at pottery-making or acrylic painting, don’t miss this opportunity!

Pastel demo. Virginia Unseld will paint a landscape in pastel, working from her photos and sketches. She will explain her technique while she paints, and offer insight into how she creates her masterful pastel paintings.
Virginia is a nationally known pastel artist, a signature member and co-president of the Pastel Society of Colorado, and one of the co-founders of the Gilpin Art Studio Tour. She has been painting since she was 12 years old, and with pastels for about 20 years. She is also a talented watercolorist and collage artist, and taught art in the public schools for 30 years. Virginia was recently juried into the prestigious International Association of Pastel Societies Exhibit.
Glass painting demo. Bruce Miller will demonstrate how he creates his unique glass art objects.
Bruce is also a skilled oil painter, whose work was exhibited and sold in the Miami area before moving to Nederland. His goal has always been to create pieces that tell a story and raise questions, making the viewer the center of the piece, creating his/her own story through the images and color. Over the past five years, Bruce has pursued and developed the art of abstract improvisational painting to create symphonies of visceral color in motion.
Acrylic interactive demo. Nancy Kirkendall will show you how to paint your own acrylic painting. We will have paint, brushes and 8×10” canvas boards for you to use to create a small masterpiece. Nancy will demonstrate her loose painting style, and then guide you through your own painting. This will be a fun and appropriate activity for all budding artists. Bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothing.
Nancy has been painting with acrylics for several years and continues to study with artist Lael Har. Nancy has won the “Peoples Choice” award at Art at the Center events.
Pottery/Sculpture interactive demo. Laura Fisher has been creating natural looking bowls, plates and other pottery for many years. She will provide clay, tools, and natural objects for you to use to create your own hand-built slab dish, decorated with leaf and grass impressions.
Laura discovered her love of clay in a prep school ceramics class, her salvation from challenging academics. When college landed her in Boulder, she discovered the City Pottery Lab in the old Fire House on “The Hill” for a while before life got in the way of clay. It was the move to Eldora 18 years ago that eventually brought her back to being a potter. When long-time local potter Lois Harris moved from the area, she left behind her studio that she’d kept at the Fishers’ for many years. Laura’s pottery “Windspirations” are always changing form and function, and are among the many things she is “windspired” to do.
