Panthers prepare for first home game

ned fb MIKE WOODBarbara Lawlor, Nederland.     On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. the Nederland High School Panther football team will take their own field in a 8-man game against the Elbert Bulldogs. The Panthers have been practicing for the last couple of weeks, learning 8-man positions and plays as they prepare for a new season and new hope for a winning year.

The Elbert Bulldogs are a formidable opponent, coming up with consistent winning records including a 10-1, 2012 season. Their 2013 season, however, ended with a 3-6 record, which means they come onto the field of their first game hungry for a win.

They couldn’t be more ready for a win than the Panthers, who have haven’t had a win for the past two seasons. They return to 8-man football, at which they did well in 2006 and 2007. The move to 8-man has led to an increase in players, which will allow for team members who play both offense and defense to catch a breather

Last Saturday, during the traditional scrimmage with Fairview High School’s junior varsity team, the Panthers held their own for the first time, giving impetus to the hope that the Ned boys are ready for a competitive, in-the-game season.

Mike Wood will lead the Panthers as quarterback this Saturday as his team looks to  come up with points. It is a home game and this year NHS has a cheerleading squad who will lead fans in support of the hometown boys. Fall is the time for football and fans are encouraged to attend the game, to add their voices to a new season in a new league and with new promise of a winning season.
