Barbara Lawlor, Nederland.     A couple of mountain bikers navigating the West Magnolia bike trails hit trouble on the third trailhead off the road, the Hobbit 3 Trail. Around 5 p.m. on the Fourth of July, Matthew Chan, 36, of Boulder, and some friends were navigating a rough section of the trail when Chan lost control over an obstacle in the path and landed hard on the rocky terrain.

He was bleeding heavily from a femoral artery and a Flight for Life helicopter was put on standby and then given the go ahead for the rescue. The Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Nederland Fire Department, AMR Ambulance, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, where  paramedics treated the patient.

The NFPD ambulance then transported him to the landing zone in a clearing off West Magnolia. He was airlifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital.
