Lon A. Huckaby

Lon A. Huckaby

Born October 14, 1952, in Lawrence, Kansas, and passed away suddenly January 22, 2014, in Roseburg, Oregon.  He was devoted to his family as a son, husband, and father. Thousands of students were musically inspired through his 30 years as a K-12 music teacher and band director (2 years in Nebraska, 20 years at Gilpin County Schools near Black Hawk, and 8 years in Oregon). As a talented musician, he loved performing with a Dixieland jazz band, rock group, and community musicals. His love of sports started at a young age. In particular, he enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Denver Broncos and Kansas University basketball fan.
Lon leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Dawne, of Oakland, Oregon; daughter Amber of Nevada; parents Jewell and Carlene (Summy) Huckaby of Littleton (formerly Evergreen); siblings Cheryl (Leif) Colson of Conifer, Larry (Donna) Huckaby of Thornton, and Randy (Martha) Huckaby of Englewood; in-laws Jerry and Cheryl Maurer, Dana (Brad) Talich of Nevada; many nieces and nephews and other relatives, students, and friends.
He had a strong belief in music education in our schools. A tax deductible memorial fund has been set up through the Oakland School District to support their music programs (PO Box 470, Oakland, OR  97462 – Lon Huckaby Memorial).
Celebrations of life will be held at a later date in Oregon and Colorado.
