Ned skating rink opens
Time to sharpen your skates and get ready for another ice season at the Nederland Ice and Tennis Park. The recent cold snap has seen the volunteer ice makers out in subzero temps capitalizing on the opportunity to get the rink ready for the season.
The rink will be opening this week. Check the website (www.nedrink.org) or call the hotline, 720-235-8579, for opening day and ice schedule information.
It should be another great season. RINK has added some additional time slots for skating, and the youth hockey program is planning several “Jamboree” weekend tournaments. “We try to make it better every year. For the second year in a row we expect to have good solid skateable ice across the entire ice sheet on opening day,” says Dan Harrison.
Last year RINK tried applying thinner layers of water and monitoring the temperatures underneath the ice, both of which were successful and have been carried forward this year. And the learning continues, “Sometimes it’s counter intuitive, like these recent temps, you’d think we could just flood all out when it is minus 10, but we are finding that it is just never good to put down more than an inch at a time….We’ll keep learning and refining, and hopefully improve some every year,” Harrison adds.
So come out and enjoy the ice at our community park.
