Nederland Community Center
Art at the Center Reception with a New Twist
Learn local artists’ techniques at the June 7 Art at the Center reception at the Nederland Community Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Friday. Join us for local artist demonstrations of various media and have a chance to experience some of them first-hand.
This show is in conjunction with the Nederland First Friday Art Tour, which includes several local businesses sponsoring individual artists. Visit the Community Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and then continue the Art Tour in Nederland from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Pat Everson will demonstrate a new medium called Panpastels, invented and sold by the PanPastel Company. She will have some paper and a color or two for participants to try out to get a feel for how this medium works.
Although the medium is still considered pastel, the way it is formulated and used is an entirely new concept. A pigment is finely ground, like pastel, but compressed and put in a round pancake makeup-type container.
It is then applied to the surface with special brushes called Softt tools, expressly made for use with the Panpastels and similar to mascara brushes. Pat will paint an animal portrait on Pastelmat paper to demonstrate how these new pastels are used.
Catherine Hewins will talk about photography from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. She encourages anyone interested to bring in some of their own photos so that discussions can be held around different participant’s own work.
She will also talk about the two main elements of photography — composition and light. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get new ideas about how to improve your own photos. Catherine travels at least once a year, enjoying different places to take photographs. Her latest trip was to Alaska, where she photographed grizzlies as well as landscapes.
Serene Karplus will demonstrate the art of silk painting. This will be a fun participatory demo, so come try your hand at it. Serene has created several scarves for the community to paint on, and will talk about what is involved in the whole process from start to finish. Serene will also demonstrate how she creates her unique silk bowls. You may have seen some of these bowls as well as many of Serene’s beautiful photos in previous Art at the Center shows.
Jon Parker will be outside the Community Center under the tent, demonstrating how he carves his bear sculptures with a chain saw. This is a demo not to be missed!
Bette Ventrella and Betty Porter will demonstrate the different phases in the art of quilting. Both women have years of experience creating their own unique designs. They will share some of their secrets for successful and creative quilting.
