Nederland Local Artists

In 2009, the Nederland Community Center initiated its Art at the Center Show, highlighting localLocal Nederland Artists artists. Three times a year, a new display would be celebrated with an opening reception, complete with wine and tasty snacks.
Last Friday night, June 7, the opening of the summer show attracted art lovers from all over the mountains. This summer’s presentation boasted 20 artists on display with six newcomers to the venue.
As people viewed the artwork, they put stars next to the pieces that they thought were the best in four categories: Best of Show in photography, mixed media, painting and jewelry.
Nederland Area Senior President Jim Elder won the prize for best photography with his display of faces from the days when times were hard. His photograph of a hillside outside of a window was star-studded at the end of the evening.
Best of Show in mixed media went to Jen Davis, who turns twigs into design, patterns of earth colors that are organic as well as visually dramatic. Carol Cavalaris is always a favorite and she came in a close second in the mixed media category with her vivid colors and spiritual undertones.
Nancy Kirkendall’s unique fish portraits won the Best of Show painting category. She splashed colors into the scales and into the foam the writhing koi spawned. Another close second was Annie Thayer’s work, whose watercolors delved into the world around us.
Beth Grusin won the Best of Show in jewelry for her Simply Elegant necklace.
The next Art at the Center exhibition will be in September. Until then, the halls will be filled with the present work, a feast for the eyes, a tour of the poignant and beautiful images seen through the artists’ eye.
