U.S. Senator Mark Udall visited Gilpin County on Saturday, December 10, to tour the county’s Public Works Building which is heated entirely by a biomass-fueled unit. The unit primarily uses beetle-kill wood which is chopped from logs into chips for its fuel. Boulder Valley also uses a biomass-fueled unit to heat buildings on one of its county campuses. Gilpin County Commissioners Connie McLain, Buddy Schmalz and Forrest Whitman accompanied Senator Udall on the building and biomass tour led by Gilpin County Facilities Manager Bill Paulman. Senator Udall serves on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committees; visiting biomass-fueled facilities is part of his pursuing innovative ideas utilizing renewable energy sources
