Eagles leave fantastic season
The Gilpin County Eagles Volleyball Team ended its amazing 2011 ride to Regionals on Saturday. They hosted the Regional competition and competed against the state’s best 1A teams, Fleming, Pawnee and Community Christian High Schools.
In the first match, at 1 p.m., against the Fleming Wildcats, the Eagles lost three games; in the second match at 3 p.m., the Eagles lost to the Community Christian Crusaders, 25-18, 19-25 and 19-25.
The home team may have lost but spectators were treated to some high-octane volleyball, each team challenging the other not to be the one to give up the point.
In the third match, against the Pawnee Coyotes, the Eagles continued to play with heart and spunk, forcing the Coyotes to put it all on the line in the 25-23 first game. The second and third games ended with 25-14 and the girls held their heads high as they congratulated the winners.
The seniors know their high school volleyball days ended on a high note and the younger team members know they are bringing a winning spirit to the sport next year.
